Hendra A. Setyawan was born in Pacitan, East Java, 35 years ago. He has worked as a permanent photographer in KOMPAS daily since 2005. He was introduced to camera in early 2000’s with a Nikon F-3 as his first camera. He mainly learned photography from the internet, through the then popular photography forum. Before working as a photojournalist, he was a staff of a radio production team in Solo for 1.5 years.
The first five years in KOMPAS, he was stationed in Malang, East Java. The cheerful, dynamic and sincere characteristic of the local people influences his photo character a bit. He photographed a lot of important events when he was there, ranging from a hard news event or a certain sport associated with the city of Malang. In 2011, he was moved to KOMPAS headquarters in Jakarta.
Out of a variety of photography awards he has received so far, he has been impressed the most by his achievement in winning one of the awards in a sport category in 2014 from Anugerah Pewarta Foto Indonesia (Indonesia Photojournalism Award), which is the country’s most prestigious photojournalism competition.
