Honking sounds and engines noise blending in a Thursday evening in Thamrin street, Jakarta in last December. A biker with messenger bag clinging on his back, maneuver to get through between row of cars, trying to distance from the traffic. His face is somber from the exhaust smokes. Sweat drips in his cheek as screeching chain wheeled away.

His name is Achmad Zainul Rosyid (24), nick named Ocit is a bike messenger. In the street corner ahead Salemba, he sits and drinking his water relishing the bike-unfriendly city routine.

“Everyday, this is the condition (traffic), I get used to it” Ocit said leaning his bike in the side of pedestrian. This young fellow from Kebumen has been working as bike messenger in Westbike Messenger Services (WMS) for two years.

The 2018 world report of air quality AirVisual IQAir placed Jakarta as one of the most polluted City in South East Asia (CNNIndonesia.com, 2019). Riding bike is one form of resilient against pollution in the capital city. In every pedal, Ocit enjoy sense of proud. His spirit and fondness to bicycle is a realization of an innovation in preserving environment.

Ocit said, his riding in the city has not been always easy. Ocit was once a victim of hit and run incident. But He never give up his passion in riding bike.

“I was hit from behind, that was early time working in WMS. Bike was damaged, lot of physical injuries, not so much in my saving. I felt pretty much down afterward. However what else to do, I really love riding bike,” Ocit said while showing the scars on the shoulder down to his left leg.

“This is the risk I take by working in the street. It is to hit or get hit. And also problem of pollution. At the beginning, my parents disagree, however I gradually explain. Finally they (Ocit’s parents) just caution me to stay safe when riding bike in the street” he added.

Ocit often riding his bike to go to his home town. “it takes around three days two nights to get into Kebumen, in easy pace. Well, slowly I persuade my brother and my friends in home town into riding bike” told Ocit.

“My dream is to see a bike messenger services or even establish bike messenger business in home town” as he finished.
