You are Still Present
“Mama Des,” or “Na Ka,” that’s how my dear mother is affectionately addressed within our extensive family. As the eldest of eight siblings, Mama enjoys imparting advice and wisdom through the stories of her life to us. Whether we gather, worship, share meals, or travel, Mama’s stories touch our hearts and evoke deep emotions.
“Mama used to cross a river to school, even when strong currents made me fall and get hurt. My shoes washed away, my uniform soaked, still, I had to continue going to school.”
There are even more touching stories.
“As the eldest, Mama had to take care of my younger siblings, sharing clothes and food. I couldn’t have more pocket money than my younger brothers and sisters.”
Her life’s bittersweet experiences and struggles serve as a guide to me. Though I sometimes feel frustrated and question, “Why do we have to share the suffering of Mama’s life experience?”
But as I think back, her stories would soothe all of my emotions.
One thing is certain, Mama always emphasizes the power of prayer.
“From the beginning, Mama endured through prayer. We didn’t always know where to direct our prayers, unlike now with the church and fellowship. We simply kept praying.”
I was raised by a strong, loving mother. Her teachings remind me that God is present in all our prayers, whatever we face. Mama received God’s love, a priceless legacy she passes on to me.
